Yes, but you only need to use one image (i.e. of a box with rounded corners) and then position the image differently with CSS to apply each corner. That way only one image needs to be downloaded.
This is an overcomplicated technique that forces you to use non-semantic HTML markup.

Yes it's non-semantic but the PRINCIPAL is the point. And for that it's quite clever. Why not think about some alternate implementation that isn't non-semantic :)
I did an imageless design in 2003 that was very similar. I had rounded corners and diagonal lines. It was "neat".

This is awesome..!!! whatever you say images will slow down the page process even if its one image... no one can do it with one image, i challenge you... we need at least 2 images that is worst case... I recommend to use his code.. it works for me and i have done a case study with both image and non image code... this code performed well
Also you can add a Fix to this code so that it will work both in IE and Firefox....
Here is the fix add it at the beaning of the page
Create an unclosed "table" at the begning of the body just like "table" "tr" and leave the tags unclosed which fixes the issue of messiness in IE... try it... it works for me..

Great Joe.... without trying how could you say that.???? i just had issues with IE6, and IE 5.5 but if you leave an open table ( even it can be in commented manner..) which will not effect the invalid mark up... we are living in WEB 2.0 era.. even you can insert anything using dynamic html which will over come all the validation and markups.....
i am not here for an argument you can try if your code works with IE 5.5 or 6. i bet it wont... HTML written for all the browsers and not for a particular browsers.. now you can think returning whatever... you got from them... wherever ..... we cannot say that the user should have all the latest ones?? can we....??? so y cant we insert a dynamic table inside markup... which wont hurt anyone but fix up the issue.........
